TWO NEW STATUE PHOTOS

Due to variations in the bronze patina of the fountain statue, we wanted to see how the statue would look in different lighting conditions. The folks at Stewart Iron Works were kind enough to send these photos with and without a flash. It seems the statue will look beautiful in all types of light, and will take on a life of her own regardless of time of day, or amount of sun or clouds.

LIGONIER FOUNTAIN HOME SAFE AND SOUND

The Ligonier fountain has been returned this week to its original location in the town square after some refurbishing and a new coat of paint. The Ligonier fountain was shipped to Covington, KY and disassembled. The parts have been moulded and the casting process continues. Sincere thanks go out to Paul Fry and all the people of Ligonier for their generosity and help in making our fountain a reality. Our"sister" fountain will be an exact duplicate of the one that was donated to the town of Ligonier by their Fire Department in 1921.

VILLAGE FOUNTAIN TAKES SHAPE

We have received a photo from Stewart Iron Works showing the completed statue on June 4, 2010. The bronze casting of the 36" tall woman feeding a dove was completed by New England Sculpture Service in Chelsea, MA. It is now at the Stewart facility in Covington, KY, where work on the cast iron fountain base continues. Other photos show parts being moulded and cast individually, for eventual assembly. The detail is incredible. It is exciting to see the process actually take place, and to think that the fountain that will be a part of our village once again is indeed becoming a reality.

1890's FOUNTAIN FUNDRAISER

On Wednesday, March 24, 2010, almost 113 years to the day that the Babylon Women's Exchange received approval from the Board of Trustees to erect a fountain, we are having a grand fundraiser at the Venetian Yacht Club in Babylon Village. It will be held from 6:30 to 10:30pm, and the cost is $75 per person. After expenses, all monies raised will go directly to the Babylon Village Historic Reconstruction Project. Cocktail hour, open bar, and a buffet dinner will be provided, along with entertainment, raffles and a live auction. Please make plans to attend as this will be an event not to be missed. We will come together as a community to show our support for this historic and meaningful addition to the Village.

THE FIRST COMMITTEE MEETING

Our first committee meeting was held at 7:00pm on Wed. September 30, 2009 in the Babylon Village Historical Society building on West Main Street. A photographer was there to record the historic event, and Babylon's local newspaper, The Beacon, was on hand to report on the story.
A presentation was given on the fountain's history, and what we know so far. A description and history of the Women's Exchange movement was given and the significance of their contribution was discussed.

There are legends that surround the fountain, and an effort was made to clarify what is fact and what is folklore.
An enormous amount of research has been done, but more is needed to find all the pieces of the historical puzzle. If indeed a trolley car hit the fountain as believed, when did it actually happen, and how much damage, if any, was done? If, as believed, pieces of the fountain (and statue) were sunk in Sumpwam's Creek, where exactly are they, and could they possibly survive 92 years in the brackish, murky headwaters of the creek?
